1 Quick Start

On desktop, hold and drag the right mouse button to pan the camera. Use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out. Hold and drag the left mouse button to rotate the camera. Almost all user interactions will be done through the left mouse button.

While the "Armor" tool panel is active, click on any part of the armor to change its color to the color displayed in the color swatch. The "Metallic" and "Roughness" sliders can be used to change the armor's material properties. The dropdown next to the color swatch can be used to select official Games Workshop colors. The "Quick paint" menu can be used to apply color to groups of armor parts. Checking the "Copy" option will copy the color, metalness, and roughness of the next armor part clicked on.

While the "Heraldry" tool panel is active, use the "--Heraldry--" dropdown to select a heraldry and click on any part of the armor to apply the heraldry. Use the color swatch to determine the color of the heraldry. Use the size and rotation sliders to determine the size and rotation of the heraldry. The "Flip" option can be used to flip the heraldry horizontally. These settings are applied before the heraldry is added, and cannot be used to edit a heraldry already applied to an armor part. Select "Load custom heraldry" in the "--Heraldry--" dropdown to add your own heraldry (we support most image formats). Custom heraldries show up under "--User heraldries--". Select "Delete" in the "--Heraldry--" dropdown and click on a heraldry to delete it from the armor. Select "Clear all" in the "--Heraldry--" dropdown to clear all heraldries. The "Copy" option here functions like the one in the "Armor" tool panel and will copy the color of the next armor part (rather than the heraldry) clicked on.

At the top of the app, the "--Models--" dropdown can be used to change the model. The "--Presets--" dropdown can be used to apply color and heraldry presets to the model. Select "Load custom preset" to upload a custom preset (in JSON format). Select "Save preset" to store the current preset locally. Saved presets are stored under "--User presets--". Select "Export preset" to download a preset in JSON format.

The "Screenshot" button takes a snapshot of the model and exports it as an image. The "Reload" button will clear all colors and heraldries from the model and reset it to an all-black paint scheme. The "Undo" button can be used to undo the previous color or heraldry addition.

2 Painting armor

2.1 Color

The main method to change the paint of an armor part is to click on the part directly. The color of the part will change to the color displayed in the color swatch. The color swatch can be changed by clicking on it and selecting a new color. The dropdown next to the color swatch can also be used to select official Games Workshop colors, which will then populate the color swatch (see figure below).

If there is a "Quick paint" group actively selected, changing the color swatch or color dropdown will automatically apply the color to the parts in that group.

2.2 Metalness & roughness

The "Metallic" and "Roughness" sliders can be used to change the metalness and roughness of the armor's material. Metalness determines how metallic the part looks, and roughness determines how reflective the part looks. The input boxes next to the sliders can also be used instead of the sliders. If there is a "Quick paint" group actively selected, changing these sliders will automatically apply the property to the parts in that group.

2.3 Quick paint

The "Quick paint" dropdown can be used to select groups of parts to apply color and material properties. Note that if there is an active selection in the "Quick paint" dropdown, changing the color or material will cause the property to be applied to the parts in the selected group. Select the "NONE" option to cancel quick painting.

2.4 Copy color (in armor)

Checking the "Copy" option will copy the color, metalness, and roughness of the next armor part clicked on, and populate the information in the color swatch, metalness slider, and roughness slider. This can be useful for color matching different parts. The "Copy" option automatically unchecks itself after the user clicks on an armor part. The shortcut to toggle the option on desktop is the "c" key.

2.5 Randomization

There are two color randomization options. The "Random color" button will populate the color swatch with a random color. If there is a quick paint group actively selected, this random color will also be applied to the parts in the group. The "Randomize" button will automatically randomize the color of every armor part. 75 percent of the time this randomization assigns the same random color to all the parts in a group (helmet, body, backpack, etc.), and 25 percent of the time this will assign a random color to each individual part.

3.3 Size

Use the "Size" slider to change the size of the added heraldry. The input box next to the slider can also be used to set the size. The size is applied before the heraldry is added to the model. The model's scale is at one, and the size of the heraldry is relative to the model's scale. A heraldry's size ranges from zero to one.

3.4 Rotation

Use the "Rotation" slider to change the rotation of the added heraldry. The input box next to the slider can also be used to set the rotation. The rotation is applied before the heraldry is added to the model. A heraldry's rotation can range from -360 to 360.

3.5 Flip

Check the "Flip" option to flip the heraldry horizontally. This is useful for applying heraldries to opposite sides of the model where the heraldry image might be "reversed" on one side. The shortcut on desktop is the "f" key.

3.6 Adding custom heraldries

The "Load custom heraldry" option in the "--Heraldry--" dropdown allows users to upload their own custom heraldry. The tool accepts most image formats, with the best being PNG with a transparent layer. After upload, the user will be prompted to enter a name for the heraldry. The heraldry is stored under "--User heraldries--".

3.7 Clearing heraldries

Selecting the "Delete" option in the "--Heraldry--" dropdown and then clicking on or near a heraldry already added to the model will remove the heraldry from the model. Alternatively, use the "Clear all" option to remove all heraldries from the model.

3.8 Copy color (in heraldry)

Checking the "Copy" option will copy the color of the next armor part clicked on, and populate the information in the color swatch. This option does not copy the color of the heraldry near the click. The shortcut to toggle the option on desktop is the "c" key.

4 Model & presets

4.1 Changing the model

The "--Models--" dropdown can be used to change the model. There are currently three models, namely vanilla "Space Marine", "Chaos Space Marine", and "Primaris Space Marine".

4.2 Loading a preset

4.3 Saving a preset

Select "Save preset" to store the model's color and active heraldries locally. After selecting this option, users will be prompted to enter a name for the preset. Saved presets are stored under "--User presets--". Users can load these presets at any time. Reload the app will remove these presets. The shortcut on desktop is the "s" key.

4.4 Exporting a preset

Select "Export preset" to download a preset in JSON format. This file can be shared with others or used to store the preset externally.

4.5 Loading a custom preset

Select "Load custom preset" to upload a custom preset in JSON format. This will apply the color and heraldries stored in the preset to the model. After selecting this option, users will be prompted to enter a name for the preset. Presets uploaded this way are also shown under "--User presets--".

5 Other app features

5.1 Screenshot

The "Screenshot" button renders an image of the model at the current camera position and angle without the UI. The image is automatically downloaded to the user's local system.

5.2 Reload

The "Reload" button clears all colors and heraldries from the model and resets it to an all-black paint scheme. This is useful for starting over or for testing different color schemes. The shortcut on desktop is the "r" key.

5.3 Undo

The "Undo" button can be used to undo the previous color or heraldry addition. The shortcut on desktop is the "z" key.
